For North Shore golf enthusiasts, Maui Country Club plays a vital role in the social landscape and ambiance of Paia/Spreckelville. Leaving Paia Town and heading northwest towards Kahului on the Hana Highway, there is a stretch of road along the makai-towards to sea side of the highway that runs parallel to the greens of this private course. Built in the 1920's by Maui's elite businessmen and plantation bosses, it is Maui's oldest golf course. In the 30s and 40s, it drew all the golfing movie stars and celebrities including Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. Today, Maui Country Club is an egalitarian facility providing an important social network for many kama’aina and new residents. The landmark and attitude is relatively casual and provides a "sense of place" of Old Hawai'i. The club offers more than golf. There are four tennis courts, a pool, restaurant, meeting hall, lockers and shower facilities. Located next to Baldwin Beach, it's a great place to take in a morning run along the beach, have a quick swim followed by an early lunch.
